Our garden for one! It really is an urban oasis. When I bought the property 30 years ago, the woman I bought it from was nicknamed Jill from the Jungle, and the jungle feel was the reason I loved it \u2013 the trees reminded me of Natal, my childhood growing up ground.<\/p>\n

64 Rutland Avenue, 30 years ago\u2026 a funny 3 bedroomed one bathroom home, with an outside artist studio and lean-to. Some slasto paving, sandy drive-way and well treed garden, but that\u2019s all\u2026.It was a gut feel only that this was \u201cmy property\u201d \u2013 I cant say I saw loads of potential! The house itself was so dirty, it took a week to scrub the kitchen to get rid of layered grime, and 6 months to forgive the house for being so filthy.<\/p>\n

Same view 30 years later, the trees, the roof tiles and the pool have stayed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After moving in, I spent months cutting back and cleaning before I could plant and redesign. A few years later I began to collect rocks for the water feature I desired. At the same time we changed all the steel framed windows and doors to wood<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My friend Terry, working at Lifestyle where I was lecturing decorating, was the mastermind behind the design. \u00a0And once the water feature was in, \u00a0the name Amanzi was born \u2013 Amanzi meaning water in Zulu, the language of my childhood. I grew up with the beach within walking distance. My roots are in Natal, but most of my life is in Joburg.<\/p>\n

The front garden now \u00a0– Spring is my favourite time of the year, when Amanzi garden is in full flower, with spring scents from the Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Brunfelsia) the May and Jasmine especially fragrant in the crisp evenings. I love the white in Spring, as the flowers shine at night too.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
