MABONENG<\/h4>\n

Maboneng<\/a>, meaning \u201cPlace of light\u201d in Sotho, has just been recognized as one of the coolest suburbs IN THE WORLD, named so by Forbes business magazine, beating Manhattan in New York and Soho in London!<\/p>\n

Its a space that was \u00a0a whole lot of abandoned warehouses and offices, including the offices of a former Mayor. \u00a0 It\u2019s now a vibey and stylish urban neighborhood filled with quirky shops, delis, galleries and tons of eating places. And it just keeps expanding and getting better. \u00a0It\u2019s the best of street culture in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

Maboneng precinct<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

ARTS ON MAIN<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Arts on Main<\/a> <\/strong>is the start and \u00a0heart of this vibey precinct. It\u2019s a complex of converted old buildings \u00a0and a favourite destination on a Sunday where the Market on Main<\/a> <\/strong>welcomes a bustling happy crowd every Sunday from 10-3p.m. The food market \u00a0offers a hodgepodge of different foods from different nationalities. \u00a0 Choose from artisanal ice cream or bread, \u00a0to home made cordials, paella, stir fries,\u00a0 the choice goes on and on…<\/p>\n

Or sit on brightly colored cushions under the olive trees in the entrance square and drink stand up straight Ethiopian coffee. \u00a0The real thing.<\/p>\n

Grab a delicious plate of flame-grilled steak, or beer-battered fish, my favorite, Rob’s favorite is a burger and chips, at Canteen<\/a><\/strong> restaurant in the corner of the courtyard. They serve great craft beer. Relax and watch people, from all corners of the globe. Or sip a cocktail in a jam-jar\u00a0 (if its non alcoholic you want, try their homemade lemonade) while you watch \u00a0the salsa dancers on the rooftop of the Canteen.<\/p>\n

Stroll around and check out some local design and vintage clothes. William Kentridge<\/strong><\/a> has his studio here. And David Krut<\/a><\/strong> projects, part Art gallery promoting SA contemporary art, and part Bookstore, is well worth a visit.\u00a0 Browse through books you won\u2019t find anywhere else.<\/p>\n

Iwasshot in Joburg:) <\/strong><\/a>is an inspired \u00a0project, and in their shop upstairs in Arts on Main, you can buy canvases, postcards, notebooks, magnets, all printed with photographs \u00a0taken by street children. \u00a0The\u00a0project started by giving street children disposable cameras to capture their stories on film.\u00a0 This idea transformed into a gallery. \u00a0Now the initiative has grown to include Iwastrashed and iwasmade. \u00a0All locally made recycled handcraft for sale via the market or the website.\u00a0 The latest innovation is team building where corporates get to experience Maboneng.<\/p>\n

Jo \u00a0Buitendach, an inner city specialist guide, picks this as a really worthwhile visit in Maboneng. \u00a0She organizes great inner city tours through her company Past Experiences<\/strong><\/a>. Good value, entertaining and informative.<\/p>\n

THE MADIBA MURAL<\/h4>\n

The Madiba mural<\/strong> was painted by\u00a0Freddy Sam. It\u2019s \u00a0a 10 storey-tall 40 metres tribute to Nelson Mandela in memory of his belief in Ubuntu – I am because we are. \u00a0Good photography opportunity.<\/p>\n

THE BIOSCOPE<\/h4>\n

The Bioscope <\/a><\/strong>is on the ground floor of Main Street Life. \u00a0The 68 seat cinema showcases local and international independent film and has become an important space for talks and discussion about topical or controversial matters. Craft beers, endless cups of coffee, toasted paninis and pizzas are sold next door at Chalkboard <\/strong><\/a>286 Fox Street<\/p>\n

SOME GOOD FOOD AND DRINK CHOICES IN MABONENG<\/h4>\n

Time Anchor Distillery (TAD)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>is a new distillery in the heart of Maboneng and distills it\u2019s own brand called Mirari Gin in small batches.\u00a0 Take a tour and a gin tasting over the weekend. \u00a0Booking is essential. \u00a0The tasting is good value for money and comes with various garnishes to enhance flavours.<\/p>\n

TAD Distillery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Living Room<\/strong><\/a> is a relaxed plant filled rooftop cafe, with great city views. \u00a0Good casual food choices include healthy meze, salads and smoothies.\u00a0 “Our Sunday culture has become an institution for great music, awesome people and good vibes, hosted from 11am till 7pm” – check out what music is on this weekend on their fb page.<\/p>\n

The Living Room<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Try Pata Pata<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0caf\u00e9 for traditional African cuisine.\u00a0 It was inspired by 1960’s township jazz, and its eclectic mix of furnishings invites one to relax and unwind.\u00a0 On offer are simple meals\u00a0like burgers, wraps, salads and signature dishes including stuffed chicken breast, lamb shank, oxtail stew and crocodile wors. The restaurant is known\u00a0for their\u00a0live entertainment with a regular live jazz\u00a0tunes, so a great chilled night out with friends.<\/p>\n

House of Baobab<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0specialises in\u00a0traditional african cuisine from east and west Africa, Senegal and Morocco. The restaurant serves dishes such as peanut butter veggie stew, traditional lamb stew, mango atchar, African style spinach, cous cous and fish dishes. Be sure to try the African buffet and home brewed hibiscus and ginger juices.\u00a0 A guest described the restaurant as “Quaint and exotically earthy African. When you enter the restaurant you are automatically transported to a mystical Africa”\u00a0 Its always described as warm and friendly.<\/p>\n

Uncle Merv’s<\/a><\/strong> is the “home of nicely brewed coffee, homemade muesli, honey with fresh fruit, gob-smacking giant icy smoothies,\u00a0 healthy lunch snacks of rye or seedbread with avo and tomato, poached chicken or soups.”\u00a0 Its a great meeting place to have a cup of coffee or a light meal, and mix and mingle.\u00a0 There’s always a conversation to join or if you’re up for adventure, rent bicycles from them for R40 for 3 hours\/<\/p>\n

Little Addis<\/a><\/strong> is a little gem, and is renowned for its authentic Ethiopian food.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The food is absolutely simple and scrumptious. Great for vegetarians,\u00a0 plenty of vegetable options.<\/p>\n

Che Agentine grill<\/a><\/strong> is definitely for carnivores, run by Oscar and Bernardo, two Argentines who specialise in unique and tasty grills.<\/p>\n
