Tips for Travellers – Amanzi Guest House Neighbourhood

  • GYMS: Five minutes down the road is Planet Fitness  (we have vouchers for this, so, no need to join) with Virgin Active (Old Eds) about 20 minutes.

  • MOBILE PHONES: Get a local sim card for your phone – this can be purchased at the airport on arrival, or Amanzi Guest House will organize one for you before you arrive – if you let us know.

  • WEATHER: Johannesburg’s best kept secret is the Highveld weather.

Summer temperatures range from high 20’s during the day (sometimes getting up to high 30’s on occasional really hot days) but cooling down at night.

During Winter the days are generally glorious from 10 to 4 p.m. – between 16 and 22 degrees) but dropping during the night below 5 degrees and can go down to freezing.

  • ATM’S: The closest is at Spar ( less than a kilometer away) and at Hyde Park Mall

  • SHOPPING HOURS: Local shop hours are from 9 – 5 p.m., weekends till 1 p.m. but some of the larger malls open 7 days a week and may stay open till 7 p.m.

Bank hours are from 9 – 3.30 and on Saturday till 11.30 a.m.

Restaurant kitchens close around 10 p.m. (maybe earlier for some of the smaller restaurants). A lot of restaurants are closed on a Monday

  • TRANSPORT: Most guests will hire a car at the airport. If not hiring, there is a very efficient local taxi service (From R12 per kilometre) – Rose Taxis (minimum charge R50) or most guests use Uber.

The Gautrain is fast, avoids traffic delays, and operates from 5.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. Convenient, fast and stops in Sandton, and Rosebank.
