At last, Summer is beginning to show its face, – you’ve filled your shopping basket , and ready to eat. You’re in luck in The Parks. Johannesburg, for want of Cape beaches and mountains, has supurb places to lunch and meet friends, or simply to watch the world go by. I have a friend who loves to sit by herself in a café, but with others around – she says she has privacy and company at the same time. Hodges in The Colony Centre or Warm n Glad in St Albans Square both in Craighall Park are ideal to do this. Or relax in lovely garden settings at La vie en Rose in Hyde Park or Munch in Parkwood.
If it’s a bustling vibe you’re after, try Fournos in Craighall Park – Rob recommends the bottomless black coffee and apple Danish, their ice cream is a favourite of mine (caramel) Another favourite is Moemas in Parktown North – try their crunchy broccoli and goat cheese quiches and tarts or sinful pastries.
Melissas in Parkhurst promises the health conscious a lunch feast of organic and raw foods which complements their worthwhile host of free trade and locally produced goods for sale in store.
Pub grub and a pint of craft beer for the discerning diner can be found at the very popular Foundry in Parktown North, and for a more casual vibe, the Jolly Roger in Parkhurst and Giles in Craighall Park are local favourites.
